Aishwarya Rai

The svelte beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a popular Indian actress and former Miss World. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is married to actor Abhishek Bachchan and is the daughter-in law of legendary bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. Aishwarya was born on 1st November, 1973 to Krishnaraj Rai and Vrinda Rai in Mangalore, Karnataka. Her brother Aditya Rai is an engineer in the merchant navy.

Aishwarya attended the Arya Vidya Mandir High School in Santa Cruz, Jai Hind College at Churchgate and Ruparel College in Matunga. Aishwarya aspired to be an architect before joining modelling. During her studies, she took up modelling as a part time profession and was seen in a couple of TV commercials. Aishwarya Rai was crowned the Miss India runner up in 1994 and went on to become Miss World 1994.

Aishwarya made her film debut in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Iruvar’ alongside Mohanlal and Tabu. The movie became a critical success and earned several awards including two national awards. Aishwarya’s first bollywood film was ‘Aur Pyar Ho gaya’ opposite Bobby Deol. The movie turned to be a commercial and critical failure. Aishwarya’s first commercial success was S. Shankar’s Tamil film ‘Jeans’.

Aishwarya Rai stormed the Indian film industry with her brilliant performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ opposite Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan released in 1999. The film became a huge success at the box office and bagged several prestigious awards. Aishwarya won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. Later that year she starred in Subhash Ghai’s romantic musical ‘Taal’ alongside Anil Kapoor and Akshay Khanna. Her angelic looks and genuine performance was appreciated by the critics as well as audiences.

Aishwarya simply excelled in her next releases including Mansoor Khan’s ‘Josh’, ‘Satish Kaushik’s ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’, Aditya Chopra’s ‘Mohabbatein’ and Tamil film ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’. Aishwarya’s 2002 blockbuster hit ‘Devdas’ was screened at Cannes Film Festival and became the highest earner of the year. ‘Devdas’ was directed by notable filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and also featured Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Aishwarya Rai received her second Filmfare Best Actress Award for ‘Devdas’.

Aishwarya then appeared in ‘Chokher Bali’, a Bengali film by Rituparno Ghosh that earned rave reviews for Aishwarya’s performance. Her next two releases ‘Dil Ka Rishta’ and ‘Kuch Na Kaho’ failed at the box office and panned by the critics. Aishwarya’s critically acclaimed performances in Gurinder Chadha's English film ‘Bride and Prejudice’, Rajkumar Santoshi's ‘Khakee’ and Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘Raincoat’ proved her versatility and flair for cinema.

Before making a special appearance in a song sequence in Shaad Ali’s ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya was seen in a couple of movies like’Shabd’ and ‘The Mistress of Spices’ that bombed at the box office. Aishwarya’s other consequent hits include ‘Dhoom- 2’, ‘Jodha Akbar’, ‘Guru’, ‘Sarkar Raj’ and ‘Pink Panther 2’.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is the first Indian actress to become a jury member at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Aishwarya has been conferred upon a number of honors including the Padma Shri by the Govt. Of India, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the second highest Order of France, Female Star of The Decade at the tenth IIFA Awards held in Macau. She was also honored by the London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum by installing her wax replica in 2004.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has appeared in a number of international shows including Late Show with David Letterman, Oprah's "Women Across the Globe", Martha Stewart's show Martha and The Tyra Banks Show. Aishwarya Rai has also been named as "The World's Most Beautiful Woman" by various magazines and surveys.

Aishwarya’s forthcoming films include S. Shankar’s Tamil film ‘Endhiran’, Mani Ratnam's ‘Raavana’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Guzaarish’ and Vipul Shah's ‘Action Replay’.

The National Film Award winner Anil Kapoor is a well known actor worldwide. Anil Kapoor has starred in Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the Academy Award winner of 2008 wherein Anil got to share the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Anil Kapoor was born on 24th December 1959 in Tilak Nagar, Mumbai. Anil Kapoor’s father Surinder Kapoor was the secretary of notable actor Shammi Kapoor, but later he became a successful film producer. Anil’s brother Boney Kapoor is also a film producer and sister-in-law Sridevi is a distinguished actress and dancer. His younger brother Sanjay Kapoor has also featured in a few Hindi films.

Anil Kapoor is married to Sunita Kapoor, a former model and the couple is blessed with three children. Their eldest daughter Sonam made her bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saanwariya’ and also starred in critically appreciated ‘Delhi-6’. Rhea Kapoor, the younger daughter is studying in New York while son, Harsh is studying at the Chapman University.

Anil Kapoor’s debut film in bollywood was ‘Hamare Tumhare’ released in 1979 as a supporting actor.
