Anil Kapoor was born on 24th December 1959 in Tilak Nagar, Mumbai. Anil Kapoor’s father Surinder Kapoor was the secretary of notable actor Shammi Kapoor, but later he became a successful film producer. Anil’s brother Boney Kapoor is also a film producer and sister-in-law Sridevi is a distinguished actress and dancer. His younger brother Sanjay Kapoor has also featured in a few Hindi films.
Anil Kapoor is married to Sunita Kapoor, a former model and the couple is blessed with three children. Their eldest daughter Sonam made her bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saanwariya’ and also starred in critically appreciated ‘Delhi-6’. Rhea Kapoor, the younger daughter is studying in New York while son, Harsh is studying at the Chapman University.
Anil Kapoor attended the Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and then enrolled at the St. Xaviers College in Mumbai. However his keen interest in cinema led him to Roshan Taneja’s acting classes.
Anil Kapoor’s debut film in bollywood was ‘Hamare Tumhare’ released in 1979 as a supporting actor. Before his first leading appearance in ‘Woh 7 Din’, Anil was seen in supporting roles in ‘Hum Paanch’ and ‘Shakti’. Anil Kapoor was highly appreciated for his subtle performance in ‘Woh Saat Din’. Anil Kapoor was cast by Yashraj banner in 1984 release ‘Mashaal’ alongside the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. Anil’s performance as a tapori was completely natural and it got him his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. Anil Kapoor worked in a number of commercially successful movies during the 80s including ‘Yudh’, ‘Saaheb’, ‘Janbaaz’, ‘Insaaf Ki Awaaz’, ‘Meri Jung’, ‘Karma’and ‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’. Anil Kapoor illustrated his hilarious comic skills in ‘Chameli ki Shadi’.
Anil Kapoor earned the star status when he won accolades from masses as well as classes for his performance in ‘Mr. India’. Shekhar Kapur’s science fiction flick ‘Mr. India’ where Anil played the protagonist opposite Sridevi became the biggest hit of the year, 1987. Anil Kapoor received his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for 1988 blockbuster ‘Tezaab’. Anil Kapoor cemented his superstardom with box office hits like ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Parinda ’ and ‘Rakhwala’. Anil’s riveting performance as an autistic person in ‘Eeshwar’ released in 1989 is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant performances in Indian cinema.
Anil Kapoor saw exemplary success in 90s with smash hits ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’ , ‘Ghar Ho To Aisa’, ‘Benaam Badshah’ and Yash Chora’s romantic drama ‘Lamhe’. Anil Gapoor garnered his second Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1992 for Indra Kumar’s ‘Beta’ opposite Madhuri Dixit. Anil Kapoor got positive reviews for his performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘1942- A Love Story’ opposite Manisha Koirala. His success stride continued with hits like ‘Laadla’, ‘Judaai’, ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain and ‘Taal’.
Anil Kapoor’s ‘Virasat’ won critical acclaims and established him as a leading versatile actor of the Indian cinema. Anil Kapoor won his first National Film Award for his exceptional performance in critically acclaimed ‘Pukar’ released in 2000. Anil later appeared in reasonably successes like ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’, ‘Calcutta Mail’, ‘Nayak’,’No Entry’, ‘Welcome’ and ‘Race’. Anil Kapoor received huge appreciation for his performance in ‘Rishtey’, ‘Armaan’, ‘Chocolate’, ‘My Wife’s Murder’ and ‘Black and White’. His multi-starrer 2007 release ‘Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love’ bombed at the Indian box office but did extremely well in the overseas market.
Anil’s first international project ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was released in 2008 and is the proud winner of several awards at international film festivals and ceremonies. Besides being an Academy Award winner, the movie also earned four Glden Globe Awards and the cast was nominated for the Best Ensemble Cast at the Black Reel Awards of 2008.Anil got rave reviews and appreciations for his successful portrayal of Omar Hassan, President of the fictional IRK in the eighth season of the award-winning action series 24.
Anil Kapoor’s next projects ‘No Problem’ and ‘Race 2’ are scheduled to be released in 2010.
