How To Dress in Gujarati Wedding

The state of Gujarat in India is one of the richest states in culture and heritage and therefore weddings in Gujarat are strongly bound to the roots of the culture and traditions. Moreover, the wedding attires of the Gujarati brides are completely different from attires of other Indian brides. This means that dressing for a Gujarati wedding even as a guest is challenging. Right from the rituals followed, every aspect of a Gujarati marriage reflect the tradition prevalent to the state. People from the Gujarat adore themselves with colorful attires in weddings celebrations and the attires exhibit glimpses of their rich culture. The most preferred attire for Gujarati weddings for women is the saree. This applies to both brides and women guests. For the men both the groom and the gusts, the most preferred attire is the dhoti kurta. The Gujarati marriage is a classic example of ethnicity in which people dress up in beautiful rainbow colors.

The Gujarati people are very conservative and traditional and when attending their weddings as a guest, it is recommended that you go for a traditional outfit. For women, the sari is the most recommended outfit to wear to a Guajarati wedding. However, you can wear other traditional clothes such as the salwar kameez or the Lehenga. For men, traditional attire is also still recommended such as the dhoti kurta or the Punjabi suit. It is important to note that if you decide to wear a sari, it must be draped in the Gujarat style. The Gujarat has their own unique way of draping the sari that is different from other Indians.  Color is also an important factor to consider when attending a Gujarati wedding. Regardless of the outfit you decide to wear, it is important to ensure that it is colorful. This applies to both men and women but especially for women.

Apart from color, jewelry is also a significant part of the Gujarat culture. Women must accessorize their outfits with jewelry such as the poncho and the bangadi. The poncho is a bracelet worn on the wrist and the bangadi are bangles. Brides are expected to wear other mandatory jewelry such as the bindi which is worn on the forehead. Men do not require a lot of accessories as women but they can also accessorize with bracelets and necklaces. Men can also wear Bandhej dupatta around their necks to add spice to their looks if they are not into jewelry.

In the present times, traditional attires worn in Gujarati weddings are starting to give way to modern styled attires. Most traditional attires have been westernized or modernized to make them more stylish and up to date with modern trends. Most people attending Guajarati weddings whether they are Guajarati or non-Guajarati are continuously going for western outfit rather than traditional attire or traditional attire that has been westernized. More men are now attending Guajarati weddings with formal suits while women attending the weddings with formal westernized dresses rather than the traditional Guajarati outfits.
