Punjabi
suits are a popular traditional clothing for Indian women
especially in the Punjab region of India hence the name. These garments are
also commonly known as the salwar kameez and they are among the most commonly
worn Indian clothes by women of all ages and lately even men. The garment was
introduced in India during the Mughal era and ever since the designs have
evolved into its present form today. Today the suits are worn for fashion
mostly in India and Asian countries and even in the western world thanks to its
different styles and designs as well as its comfort and versatility.
The traditional Punjabi suit consist of three distinct peaces namely the salwar, the kameez and
the dupatta and they are discussed below.
· Kameez
The kameez is also known as the kurta and it is the
top that is worn with the salwar. The top is long and mostly reaches the knee
although modern designs have some kameez reaching just below the waist. It is long
sleeved and free and it has side seams that are cut to be opened below the
navel. The kameez has a western-style collar that is usually embroidered to
give it a sense of sophistication.
· Salwar
This is the trouser part of the suit. It is a
comfortable set of pants which is wide and has a ballooning shape at the top
and tappers at the bottom. It is also narrow at the ankles. A distinctive
feature of this trouser is the way it is pleated at the waist and the use of
the drawstring which can be used to adjust the trouser as per the comfort of
the wearer.
· Dupatta
This is what completes the look of the suit. This is
a long scarf that is worn or folded over the shoulder. It is also called the
odhani. It can be worn over the head or around the neck depending on the
preference of the wearer of the suit.
